10 Characteristics A Successful Entrepreneur Has That Can’t Be Taught In School

When you first think about creating an online business, you’ll probably get a flood of emotions such as excitement, fear, and hopefulness running through your mind as you start to think about all the possibilities the future may hold for you.

Because I can tell you I definitely felt this way when I first started out, and still do every time I create a new business.

However all these great feelings can come to a sudden halt, because the reality is that running a business is hard work and usually involves failing multiple times to figure out what works and doesn’t work for you.

So it’s easy to see why so many people don’t make money online, because they give up the second their faced with any problems.

Therefore within my post today, I want to give you 10 characteristics a successful entrepreneur has that can’t be taught in school — that way you can get in the right mindset and succeed when you start your online journey.

1. Confidence

One of the most important traits all entrepreneurs have, is they are confident in their ability that they will succeed no matter what happens.

Because you WILL have bumps and hurdles you’ll have to overcome as you build out your business, and the difference between someone who succeeds and someone that doesn’t — is the person who comes out on tops always believes in them self.

So make sure that you have the right training and knowledge before you get started — that way you won’t be doubting yourself every time something doesn’t go your way.

2. Passion

Normally when you talk to a person working a regular 9-5 job, the response you’ll get is something along the lines of how they can’t wait for the weekend — and that working 40 hours a week can sometimes feel like a lifetime.

However an entrepreneur who loves what they do, is the exact opposite.

You’ll hear them say something along the lines that they can’t wait to get back to work and start testing new things out like figuring out ways to maximize their ROI.

Also sometimes you’ll even see these same people working 10 – 12 hours a day and be happy about it — simply because they are passionate about what they are doing.

And I think this just proves the old saying, that if you love what you do you’ll never work another day in your life.

3. Determination

creating a lightbulb

As I mentioned earlier, if you’re wanting to become a successful entrepreneur — then you are going to be faced with problems on a continual basis, and yes even fail at a lot of things you do as well.

However what separates the people who are successful from the ones who aren’t, is not whether or not they fail — but HOW they deal with these encounters.

You see people who don’t succeed at building a business online or anything in life for a matter of fact are people that give up, but the people who see failure as an opportunity to learn what they did wrong and learn how to work pass this are the successful ones.

Or as in another famous quote I like a lot is by Thomas Edison which says…

I have not failed once. I have succeeded in proving that those 10,000 ways will not work. When I have eliminated the ways that will not work, I will find the way that will work.”

4. Patience

I think above all other traits a successful entrepreneur has, if you can master the art of being patient then I believe you can become successful very easily.

And seeing as I’m a patient person ( or at least I think I am ), I will tell you that this trait is a must.

Because in business things never work out the way you think they will, and they most definitely don’t happen as fast as you would like.

I remember when I first started my business a while back, I thought I would be making $1,000’s of dollars within 6 months time. But guess what?

It took me a little bit longer than that to earn my first sale!

But luckily I stuck with it and was able to earn even more sales since I didn’t just throw in the towel.

So if you can tough it out in the beginning when nothing exciting is happening in your business and you think you’re doing everything wrong — then you will beat about 90% of everyone else simply because you did not give up.

5. Creative Thinker

When you become an entrepreneur, another important skill you’ll want learn quickly is how to become a creative person and think outside the box.

Because even though these quick rich schemes online claim you can plug into some “done for you system” to earn thousands of dollars a day — this won’t work for one obvious reason.

Competition.

Because obviously when your competing against thousands of other people, and you have the exact same sales page as everyone else — it makes it very hard to stand out from the crowd and persuade people to buy from you.

However if you can think of how to market a product with a different angle or new spin, then you’ll have a much higher chance of people buying from you instead of someone else.

6. Risk-Taker

Learning how to take risk is not only something you’ll have to get comfortable with, but in essence is the very nature of building an online business.

Because you’re basically trying to create something that’s not guaranteed to be profitable — which means you’ll be having to do things you aren’t comfortable with or know how to do.

However when you get over your initial fear of making mistakes and whether or not what your doing will work — then you’ll be able to achieve things you never thought possible when you just dive head first toward your goals.

But again this is only possibly if you learn how to NOT stay comfortable, and push yourself to try new and different things all the time.

7. Motivation

While building a business can be a lot of fun ( especially when you first start out ), eventually your going to have days and sometimes weeks when you will not want to do anything.

However having something that will motivate you through these tough times will make it a lot easier to remind yourself WHY you wanted to do this in the first place.

For example some people would like to build an online business to be able to travel the world, some would like it so they can have the freedom to work when they want and how they want, and others would like to build one just so they can spend more time with their loved ones.

So whatever the case may be, if you focus on that one motivating factor that drives you to work each and every day — then you’ll find that it becomes a whole lot easier.

8. Disciplined

Staying disciplined

Now while having something to motivate you to work on your business every day is important, it’s not as important as learning how to be self disciplined.

And I would say that this one trait is so important, that it’s the very reason why most people either succeed or fail when building an online business.

Because unlike a traditional 9-5 job, you won’t have a boss telling you what to do — and you also won’t have someone to talk to about your past weekend when you feel bored.

So learning how to stay disciplined to your work rather than get distracted and watch TV or do something else will help you achieve your dreams and grow to become a very successful entrepreneur.

9. Optimism

To be a successful entrepreneur, you have to stay optimistic about the future of your business because there are going to be many times that building a business can get you down.

For example when you first start creating your business online, it can literally seem like FOREVER before you see any of substance start to form from your hard work.

But staying positive and continually working day in and day out knowing that what your doing is going to help you have a better future in the long run will help you stay on the path of success.

And another easy way I’ve personally found to help keep myself staying positive, is by setting up small goals and working hard to complete them.

For instance, I may try to write 20 blog post in 1 month, reach a new time high of how many people visit my site in a month, and of course make more money than I did the previous month.

And I’ve found every time I achieve one of these small goals, I feel good myself and look forward to achieving bigger and harder goals.

So whether you have to create small goals or do something else, try to find ways to keep a positive outlook on your business so you won’t get down on yourself and possibly give up all together.

10. Knowledge Seeker

Last but not least, one of the most important traits all successful entrepreneurs have in common is they are continually expanding their knowledge and learning new things each and every day.

And when it comes to building an online business, this is especially important due to how fast paced things change online.

Because if your not caught up on what is and is not working — then you could be doing thing that not only might not work, but you could be doing things that can possibly harm your business in the long run as well.

So whether you are just starting out, or are making a full time income with your business already — always keep an open mind and find ways to keep improving your knowledge.

Final Thoughts

So there you have it, these are my 10 characteristics I think all entrepreneurs should have or work toward developing if they want to become successful online.

Because without being someone who is self disciplined, patient, determined, and among other things — there’s no training in the world that will help you out.

However if you already have these characteristics, all that’s’s left is finding a reputable training source that can give you the knowledge you’ll need to become successful.

And being someone who’s reviewed hundreds of program online in my career, I still consider this to be my #1 most recommended product online for teaching people how to build a profitable business from scratch around a topic they are passionate about.

I say this because they offer easy to follow step by step training both in written and video format, they give you all the tools you’ll need to become successful, they offer 24/7 technical support, and you can communicate with thousands of other successful entrepreneurs that will be able to help you out when your feeling stuck.

And on top of that, they let you try their program out completely for free — which means they’ll be no need for your credit card or any other type of payment.

You simply enter your name and email address to become a member.

So if you are a self driven person that has all the characteristics I mentioned above and now just need a program to help steer you in the right direction — I urge you to click the picture below to learn more about my favorite program online.

I hope you found this post helpful in showing you what a typical entrepreneur work ethics are like, that way you can see if you already have these characteristics or so that you can work toward developing them.

However if you have any questions you’d like to ask, or would like to tell me some other characteristics you feel successful entrepreneurs should have — feel free to leave a comment below 🙂

  1. Hi Michael,

Thank you for the awesome article!!

I wish I had this a few years ago when I was just starting out in business. The only thing I kept thinking as I encountered problem after problem was, why didn’t they teach this in school? As I think back on what I actually learned in school, I use very little of it on a daily basis.

If we had learned all of these awesome skills, we would be far batter off. I had to learn most of them on my own. Education really should consider changing. A lot of these skills are learned through experience though so it would be hard to teach for sure.

Definitely going to share this one!! Thanks again.

    • Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment Dan, and I completely agree with you about the school’s education system.

Now While I can appreciate subjects like history, math and science are important — I also believe they should teach kids not just how to get a “JOB” but to develop the mindset to do anything they want in life including starting and running an online business.

But of course everyone is still brainwashed into thinking you need to go to college, get a bachelor degree or higher, rack up thousands of dollars of debt, then either find a job that has nothing to do with your degree or if you do find one get only minimal raises from time to time.

However as I try to tell people within my blog here, this simply isn’t the only way to make living in the world — because within this platform here there are some people in their young 20’s making $30,000 plus dollars in a single day!

So I think the sooner people try to develop a different mindset and adopt some of these characteristics successful entrepreneurs have, then quicker they will be able to do greater things with their life.

  2. Thank you for a nice Sunday afternoon read. From my tiny experience I noticed one more important feature you need. It’s consistency. You may be determined and passionate, but if you only work for so many days straight and then do nothing for two weeks after that, it is hard to expect positive results.

I also want to ask were you look for blogging ideas. I experienced that after a while when you have a decent amount of content it is not a pure creativity to think of new topics.

    • Great one Ablati! I definitely should have added that to my list because it is very important.

Because Google loves content and lots of it, BUT it also likes fresh content. So if your not updating your website on a regular basis you’ll start to see your rankings start to decline.

Now where I get my ideas from really is a combination of just thinking of topics I think people will want know more about, and looking at other authority sites within my niche to see what they write about.

Also I spend a good majority of my time doing product reviews, so it’s just a matter of finding new / popular products and writing about them.

Hope that has helped answer your question. 🙂

  3. Thank you for your motivational article Michael,

As someone who has been learning about Affiliate Marketing for a little over 6 months, I have definitely hit the buffers a little bit over the last month. Your article has assisted me in reigniting the flame to rediscover my determination and discipline to make my online business a success.

    • I’m glad my post could help ignite that fire underneath you again.

Remember that it’s OK to take a break every once in a while to relax ( because we all need it ) — but after you do that come back willing to work hard again.

And as long as you stick to working on your business (even if it’s just a little bit every day), you’ll start to see good results come your way. 🙂

  4. A lot of value to be found on this post on characteristics of a successful entrepreneur.

This is a great and simple guide to follow. You laid it all out clearly and showed series of examples that helped emphasize your various points. This guide will be very useful for me because I am a new business man. I think the 5th point is very important “creative thinker” and its a real eye opener for me.

    Thanks for sharing

    • Glad you found my article helpful Ola.

And yes being a creative thinker a great characteristic to develop, because people tend to buy from people they know, like, and trust.

But if you’re basically copying what everyone else is doing, then your readers will never get to know you as a person.

So simply creating content in your own unique way is a good example of how you can start to become creative and market your website with a new angle.
