What Is Castingwords?
Castingwords is a transcription firm that started back in 2005 by Rachel Pearson and Nathan McFarland. The purpose of their website is to help people make money online by transcribing files, which therefore will help their customers easily find good quality transcribers.
Now I’ll tell you right from the start that CW is not a scam, and that it is indeed a legitimate company you can earn money from.
My goal within this Castingwords review is to show you exactly how this company works and how much you can expect to earn — that way you can make an educated decision as to whether or not you want to try this out.
So with that said, let’s jump right into things here.
How Does It Work?
As I previously mentioned, what you’ll be doing within CW is transcribing files then getting paid based on how you did. Basically the better you do the more you’ll get paid (I’ll be covering more on this in a second).
Now what I really like about their company is that their requirements to join are quite lenient — allowing basically anyone to easily join. In fact it took me around 3 minutes to fully sign up and start viewing their jobs.
What’s also nice is you can determine when you want to work and how much work you want to do since your an independent contractor. So if your in dire need of some quick cash, you can theoretically start earning money as soon as you sign up.
How Do You Join?
To become a member of Castingwords is actually quite simple. All you have to do is fill out some basic info, have a verified PayPal account, and of course a computer and a reasonably fast internet connection to join.
Also if you’d like to make your life easier, you can get other accessories like a headset so you can hear the files easier.
As I said earlier, the whole process will take you on average about 5 minutes to sign up, become a member of CW, and start taking on jobs.
You can become a member by filling out the Castingwords application here.
What Are Their Jobs Like?
From what I gathered after having a quick look through CW, is their jobs range from 1 minute all the way up to an hour long.
What’s nice is you can sort the jobs either by how long they are, how much they pay per minute, or how much the entire job will pay you after you finish it.
Personally I would start off doing the 1-minute jobs to get the hang of things (as transcribing is not an easy job to do) — then as you get more comfortable gradually start taking on harder and longer task.
How Much Do They Pay?
Since each job is going to vary based on what type of job you do, what level rank you are, and what grade you’re at — this also means that the pay is not going to be a standard rate. In short though you’ll get paid about $1.00 dollar per audio minute.
So if you are a pretty skilled transcriber, you could easily fly through several jobs and earn a nice bit of money. However if you’re just starting out, then it might take a while to start earning “decent” money until you get the hang of it.
The good thing however is most of Castingwords jobs are bonus based — meaning the better you do the better you’ll get paid.
How Their Bonus System Works
With CW each job you do is given a grade system starting at 0 then going all the way up to 9. Depending on how well your grade is, will also determine what kind of bonus you’ll get.
That’s why it’s important to take your time and learn how to transcribe audio files correctly, and to help you do this you can have a look at their Style Guide to see what they expect.
So getting back the to bonuses, let me break down what each grade will pay you.
Grade 0-4: Your work will get rejected and you’ll be paid nothing
Grade 5: You’ll get the base pay
Grade 6: You’ll get paid 1.5 times the base amount
Grade 7: You’ll get paid 2 times the base amount
Grade 8: You’ll get paid 2.5 times the base amount
Grade 9: You’ll get paid 3 times the base amount
What I Like About It
Their bonus system is great for beginners.
I love the fact that as soon as you join, you can start earning decent money depending on how well you do and not what rank your at. This gives everyone pretty much an equal playing field to get paid fairly.
You can work whenever you want.
Seeing as you’re the one who is requesting work, this also means you can work as little as you want or as much as you want. This is especially helpful for people that have busy schedules like college students, or someone that already has a full time job.
Becoming a member is quick and easy.
By filling out some basic information about yourself and verifying a working PayPal account, you can become a member and start working on jobs within about 5 minutes.
You only have to reach $1.00 dollar to get paid.
By only having to reach a minimum of 1 dollar to get paid, this makes it extremely easily to earn money from Castingwords.
What I Don’t Like About It
Most orders only come during U.S. business hours.
If your just joining Castingwords, then this also means you won’t qualify for many jobs. Therefore you’ll have to wait until normal U.S. business hours to start getting jobs that you can work on.
Transcription takes a while to get good at.
Transcription while seems easy on the surface, is actually quite hard to get good at.
You have to be a fairly fast and accurate typer, you have to know how to use proper grammar, and most importantly you have to have a good ear to understand what you’re listening too.
So if your new to the whole transcription thing, it might take you several weeks or months before you start earning some good money.
Who Is Castingwords For?
Castingwords is mainly for people who are either good at transcribing, or want to learn how to become better at transcribing.
Also if you’re already good at transcribing, this can be a great way to start earning some quick cash by the end of the week.
My Final Rating – Is Castingwords A Scam?
4 out of 5
After reviewing Castingwords, I can say for certain that it’s not a scam. They have many jobs during the work week you can choose from, you can get paid after reaching $1.00 dollar, and the better you do the more you’ll get paid.
With that said though I want to reiterate that transcription is not easy and actually might not be for everyone. People who’ve never transcribed before might find it hard and quite slow at first to earn decent money.
Therefore if you’re not a very fast typer, have a hard time listening to long audio files, or just find transcribing boring like I do — why not out my #1 recommended method for making money online.
- You can actually get paid way more then you ever would transcribing
- You’d be writing about topics you enjoy
- And you can still work whenever and wherever you want
