How To Make A Passive Income Online – 6 Ways That Really Work

The thing that makes the internet so great, is there are so many ways you can go about making money with it. However learning how to make a passive income online is probably one of the main reasons people are drawn toward it.

I mean wouldn’t want to sit on a beach somewhere while money is pouring into your bank? I know I do!

While this can be a possibility (to a certain extent), what many people don’t tell you is that it takes a lot of hard work and patience to get up to this point.

Sometimes it can take 6 months or sometimes 2 years until you have system in place that runs almost completely on autopilot. But if your willing to wait that long, and put forth the effort needed — you too can be sitting on that beach in the near future and still be making money.

So now that we got that cleared, here are 6 great ways that can let you start making a passive income online.

1. Make A Sales Funnel Then Build An Email List

One of the more popular methods toward creating a passive income online, is by creating a sales funnel. By doing this you can basically take customers through a series of stages, so by the end of the funnel that are ready to buy what you’re offering.

Sales Funnel

This is usually done by creating a single page website (or a squeeze page), then offering your customers a free gift in exchange for their email address. This could be something as simple as a 10-page e book, or a short series of lessons that can help them solve a problem.

Now once you have their email, you then want to create a series of follow up emails that provides them with lots of value and information. Then after you’ve gained their trust, you then will point them towards products to help solve their main problem. Then when someone purchases the product, you’ll get paid a commission.

The best part about this method, is once you have created your website and emails — you can literally sit back and do nothing as your customers are sent through your sales funnel.

2. Create A WordPress Theme

If you’re someone who’s great a designing and developing websites, then you should consider creating a WordPress theme to earn passive money.

With thousands of people every day starting a website online, most of them are naturally going to want a professional looking theme for their site.

So if you can target a certain audience (say people who like cooking) — then create a theme that looks great for them, you can have people buying your theme almost on a daily basis.

Some more popular places you may want to start off and try selling your theme is Themeforest, Mojo Marketplace, and StuiodPress.

3. Drop Shipping Products on Amazon.

Drop shipping is another great way you can make money online, by selling products through Amazon.

If you don’t know what drop shipping is, basically you’ll be doing the following things:

1. Selling products on your website for whatever price you want
2. A customer comes to your site and purchases the product
3. You place the order with Amazon (which is a cheaper price)
4. They then ship the order to your customer, and the difference in price will be your profit.

The thing that’s great about this method, is you can have tools that will do all of the work for you — allowing you to essentially sit back while Amazon does all the hard work.

While it may take some trial and error to find a good product to make this happen, once you do then the sky really is the limit to how much you can make.

4. Start A YouTube Channel / Create A Video Course

YouTube Channel

With YouTube being the 2nd most visited site in the world, and getting over 30million visitors a day — you can probably imagine the potential of how much money you can make from it.

So if your someone who’s not camera shy, and may have a lot of knowledge on a particular subject matter — then you might really want to consider using this method.

Now what you’ll want to do is create a YouTube channel based on a particular niche or subject matter you’re interested in, then start uploading videos preferably once a day. After time as you continue to do this, you then will start to get thousands of viewers daily which you then can make money from.

The two main ways people use YouTube to make money are from:

1. Ads: By going to your YouTube settings, you can then activate for ads to be played at the beginning of each video. While this is an easy way to start making passive money, just make sure you have LOTS of viewers before you try this method.

On average, it takes around 1,000 views to equal 1-5 dollars.

2. Selling Digital Products: The next method is by simply linking your visitors to a website, then promoting a product (such as a video series) or service. Again if one of them buys, you then get paid a commission.

Personally I would start out with method 2, then after I started getting more visitors to my channel — I would then start placing ads to earn more money.

5. Sell Photos Online

Similar to website owners needing a good theme, they also at times will want a professional picture to demonstrate what they are talking about.

So if you love taking pictures and also are really good at it, then selling your photos online can really turn into a great way to earn passive income.

Two of the top places people like buying photos is at IStockPhoto and Shutter Stock. So if you can edit your pictures say with photo shop and make them stand out against the crowd — then you’re going to love this method.

6. Blogging

I’d say blogging is by far my most favorite method on the list. It’s simple to do, you don’t have to worry about getting in front of a camera every day, and is one of the best ways to build a long-lasting business online.

Similar to creating a YouTube channel, with blogging the first thing you want to do is find a subject matter you’re really passionate about. Down the road this will help a lot, because you’ll be really engaged with your content — which will make your readers want to read it more.

After you’ve discovered your niche / topic you want to write about (say cooking) — you then will produce great content.

As time goes by and you continue writing about topics people are looking for online — you will start to slowly gain more and more traffic. I’d say after about 6 months – 1 year of writing consistantly — you’ll then be able to relax and let your website start bringing in traffic by itself.

Now once you have traffic coming in daily to your blog, you can then monetize your site in several ways like:

  • Google Adsense (ads)
  • Affiliate Marketing
  • Creating your own product
  • Sell ad space on your website

And these are just a few of the many ways you can make money from it. If you want, you can even add several of the methods I mentioned before like building an email list and selling your photos to help grow your income even more on your blog.

I know many bloggers that have been working on their site for a while, and can now work 1-2 hours a day and even take long vacations while  still be making a great income each and every day.

So if you’re someone who likes writing or is really interested in this method, I’d highly recommend you learn from one of the best training centers online.

My Final Thoughts

Whether you’re wanting to start a YouTube channel, sell pictures, or create a WordPress theme — I think you can start to see there are many different ways you can go about creating a passive income online.

Again though every single method I mentioned above takes lots of work and time before you can sit back and make money on autopilot — but in my opinon is well worth it.

Have you tried any of these methods before? If so which ones did you enjoy the most — or which one was the most profitable for you?

  1. What is the technical differences between a single page website and a blogging website? I hear of both terms and it confuses me a little bit. Is it best to use both of these methods separately or do you use them in unison with each other on one website? Thanks for the help, Jessie

    • The main difference between a single page website (or a landing page), and a blogging website is one basically is made to collect email addresses — while the other one is made to create helpful content that can then get ranked in search engines.

If all you want to do is email marketing and build a list of people in your niche, then I would go the route of creating a landing page. The only problem is to get traffic to this kind page, you are more than likely going have to pay for it through ads and other means — which can get pricey if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Therefore I highly recommend you first create a blog and start getting regular visitors to your site on a daily basis. Once you have around 100-200 people a day visiting your blog, you can then choose to create a landing page within your blog and collect email addresses that way.

This will give you a better way to engage with your audience, and if done correctly can usually result in also increasing your income quite a lot most of the time.

I hope my answer has helped clear up any confusion you may of had between a single page website, and a blog.

  2. Well I have tried drop shipping on Amazon and making a sales funnel. Both have not been successful. I must say I had some success with a sales funnel but my expenses were way above the money I made. So because of no profit I stopped. For drop shipping, I had no sales for months so I quit.
I recently started blogging and I’m loving it. I haven’t make much but willing to give it some time and test if it works. Wish me luck!

    • I too tried building a list several years back through a sales funnel — but like you I didn’t have much success because they only way I knew how to get traffic was by buying it.

I know you will do great with your blog, as long as you stick with it and don’t give up. Also as time goes by you will slowly start getting ranked within Google, and a few months down the road you can start to get good consistent traffic coming to your site.

After that you can monetize this traffic however you see fit, or start building an email list again without having to spend any money.

  3. Hi Michael!

What do you think is the best way to create a sales funnel that works?

Just a landing page with the freebie, or within a blog where you give a bit of value before asking for the e-mail?

I don’t know, maybe supporting the free ebook with some info first would be more effective than a one-page website… What do you think?

Thanks a lot for sharing this information. Very helpful!

    • I believe the best way to create a sales funnel is through a blog or website that is already getting traffic.

While you can create one page website (or a landing page), the only way to really get traffic to it is by buying it. However you will likely lose a lot of money as you have no idea what kind of people will convert to your offer.

With a blog you can get thousands of free visitors through SEO. You can then send them to your landing page or free offer to start collecting email addresses. By doing it this way, you will also have a better understanding as to what best converts with your converting to your offer.

I hope this helps answer your question. 🙂
