How To Make Money Online With A Blog – A Beginner Friendly Guide

Have you ever wondered how to make some extra cash online, or more importantly how to make money online with a blog?

Well if you have, I want to show you in my opinion one of the best ways anyone can improve their financial situation — which is creating a blog.

Now before I get into the whole process of how this works, I first want to warn you that blogging is not a get rich scheme that will be earning you thousands of dollars by the end of the month.

But it can give you extra cash for groceries, help you save up for those expensive vacations you want to take, and even let you quit your job if you work hard enough.

Before any of that can happen though, you first need to know the proper steps on how to create a successful money generating blog.

First You Need To Set Up The Foundation Of Your Blog

If you ask any successful blogger out there who’s making thousands / millions a month, they’ll all say every blog they’ve ever made boils down to a simple 4 step process.

  1. First physically setting up the blog
  2. Next is to create helpful engaging content
  3. Then you need to promote your blog socially
  4. Last but not least you then need to monetize your blog

Now if you’ve never created a blog before, or one that has brought in money for you — let me explain each one of these steps in further detail to give you some better clarification.

Setting Up Your Blog

  1. Choose Your Preferred Blogging Platform

First you need something to build your blog on. I personally prefer WordPress as it’s the biggest and most used platform around. It comes with thousands of plugins and features to really make your blog look great.

  1. Choose A Hosting Service For Your Blog

Next you’ll need hosting, which basically is what lets your blog be viewed over the internet. You may want to look around at the different providers out there and see which one best suits your needs.

Here are some of the more popular ones:

  1. Setting up a blog on your own domain

After you got hosting, you’ll now want to buy your own domain. This is basically like virtual real-estate, where you’ll be picking the url name of your site — as long as it has not been taken by someone else.

Some of the ones I’ve used in the pass are:

  1. Designing your blog

Now that you got hosting and a domain, now it’s time to make your blog more enjoyable to look at.

Assuming your using WordPress, then you have the option to choose thousands of different themes which are basically premade templates.

However when deciding on your theme it’s best to find one that’s not too distracting and easy to navigate.

How I Do It

While there’s nothing wrong with picking a domain, hosting, and blogging platform on your own — sometimes it can get confusing when  you have them in all different places, not to mention it can sometimes get pricey.

That’s why I use something called Siterubix that lets me do all these things in 1 place and get it done in about 30 seconds.

Create Great Content

Now that you got your blog all set up, its now time to start populating it with good helpful content. This can’t just be any content though, you want to write about topics people are searching for through the internet.

To do this, you want to search for keywords that can easily be ranked in search engines like Google and Yahoo.

As time goes by and you continue publishing content that is helpful to your readers, your site will gradually start to rank higher in Google bringing in sometimes thousands of people to your site a day.

Promote Your Blog Socially

Social Marketing

In the early stages of your blog, and even after it has gotten some authority with Google — you want to consistently be finding where your target audience is and engage with them.

These can be places like forums, Facebook groups, Google hangouts, Twitter, and Pinterest.

As you get involved with your audience in these different social networks, you then will want to point them back to your blog to help them solve an issue or problem they might have in your niche.

There are a few reasons why you want to do this such as:

  • you will occasionally get a few sales early on with your blog while your building it out
  • It provides you with different sources of traffic, so your not solely relying on Google
  • It helps show people that you are a REAL person that cares, and not just in this for the money

Just be careful not to get distracted while doing this, and also make sure you only spend around 15 minutes a day on social media. The rest of your time should be spent writing content, and growing your blog.

Start Monetizing Your Blog

Ok so you got your blog set up, you’ve created content, and are getting visitors on a daily basis.

Now we can get to the fun part and start converting our customers actual buyers.

The thing I love about a blog, is there are SO MANY ways in which you can go about making money with it. Usually more often than not, you will have several different income streams all coming from your blog — which is a good thing.

So let me jump right into it, and give you several different options in which you can go about monetizing your blog.

The Different Ways You Can Make Money Through Your Blog

Different Sources Of Income

As I mentioned a second ago, blogging really opens the doors letting you try your hand at a wide variety of ways in which you can make money with it.

You aren’t limited to selling certain products, having to recruit people, or buy traffic to get people to your site (though you can if you want.)

With that said, here are 8 very popular ways in which bloggers like to earn money with their website.

  1. Affiliate marketing- Affiliate marketing is one of my favorite methods when it comes to making money online. You basically will place “affiliate links” on your website that link to either a product or service. When someone clicks on your link and makes a purchase, you then get paid a commission. There’s no need to create a product, deal with returns, and best of all affiliate programs are free to join.
  1. Google Adsense- Google Adsense is another very easy way to make money from your blog. You simply add a script from Google to your website, and each time someone clicks on your ad, you get paid. However I wouldn’t recommend you start with this method until you have thousands of visitors to your site on a regular basis — because each ad usually only gives you a few cents per click.
  1. Sell Ebooks- Selling ebooks is another great way to make money through your blog, as it is fairly simple to make and can be created very quickly. Also if you don’t want to sell them, you can always offer them as free gifts to get people to sign up to your email list — which is something that can greatly benefit you down the road.
  1. Sell Memberships- Memberships are an excellent service to sell, and is one of the more lucrative ways to keep having money come in month after month. If you sell a 20 dollar membership, sometimes that one sale can earn you thousands of dollars if he or she decides to stay with the program. Some examples can be gym memberships, hosting, learning community, or auto responder.
  1. Offer Freelance Services- By having a well-established blog, you can now offer your expertise to people that may need it. These can be things like a consultant, a writer, a designer, social media manager, or web builder. While this may not be as passive of an income as some of these other methods, it is a great way to add some additional income to you’re site.
  1. Start an E commerce Store- If you have your own product or have an idea of a product you want to create, then setting up an e commerce store can really work well. With plugins like Woo Commerce and Shopify, it also makes it very easy to turn your blog into a store people can buy goods from. Some products you may want to try are t-shirts, cups, phone accessories, and watches.
  1. Flip Your Site For A Profit- If you know how to create a blog and start getting traffic to it, then you know how to do something that most people can’t do or don’t have the patience for. So if you are able to create good-looking sites fairly quickly, then you can easily sell them on sites like Flippa for a commission. I actually know someone who makes millions of dollars a year doing just this!
  1. Sponsored Post- Sponsored post are a way in which you will get money from advertisers. They will usually ask for you to write a post on your blog about their product or service — and in return will pay you for doing so. Depending on things like the quality of your writing, and how much traffic you’re getting to your site — you can expect to get around $100 – $500 dollars per post.

Don’t Put All Your Eggs Into One Basket

While all the methods I just mentioned above are excellent ways your blog can make you money, make sure you also diversify your earnings too.

Don't Put All Your Eggs Into One Basket

For example on your main blog, you can do a combination of affiliate marketing, setting up an e commerce store, and also selling your services in your spare time.

However if you have other niches / subject matters you are passionate about — you could also just stick to just affiliate marketing and make several blogs all based on different niches.

One thing I DO NOT recommend you do though, is try to build out 3-4 websites all at once. This usually leaves your sites to having very slow growth and most of the time it will also burn you out from spreading yourself to thin.

Therefore I would concentrate on 1 website, then once it is getting traffic and making you sales then you can  decide to create another one if you would like.

My Final Thoughts

Starting up a blog in my opinion is one of the best choices I think anyone can make when it comes to making money online.

As you can see there not all that hard to create, there are several different methods in which you can make money from them, and if done properly can even let you earn money on autopilot while you’re sleeping or going on vacation.

Just remember it will take a lot of work in the beginning, some patience, and knowing the proper steps to follow — but in the end I believe is well worth it.

So are you ready to get out there and make your own blog? Or do have any other questions you would like to ask me that I may not of covered in my post?

  1. Wow what a great article. You have made a great case for starting a blog.
Is a blog and a website basically the same thing?
Also I really liked the 8 ideas for monetizing your blog. Is the way you have them listed also a rank for one of them being better than another? If not, which method is your personnel favorite?

    • Yes a blog can also be called a website. A website in general is basically a page or a collection of pages that is published on a web server.

This can be a blog, an e commerce store, or a landing page.

As far as monetizing goes, I didn’t really put them in any certain order from best to worst —  it ultimately it boils down to the individual as to how they want to make money from their blog.

You could make money just from affiliate marketing, or you could have a blog that sells your own products and lets you offer freelance services at the same time.

For me personally I enjoy affiliate marketing the most because you don’t have to create your own product, it is very easy to scale once you get going, and it lets you sell just about anything in the world you want.

  2. This beginner start friendly guide is informative, straight to the point, very easy to follow and understand. The foundations you outline are so important – I never would have thought of promoting it socially – which platforms on the social side are most effective in your opinion? thanks again – this is interesting and informative

    • I’ve noticed many people tend to forget to promote their blog socially like you said David, and usually just focus on creating content and getting ranked within Google.

Like I said in the post, sharing your sites to social networks not only lets you have a different source of traffic coming to your site — but it also lets you connect with your readers in a different way as well.

I personally enjoy Facebook and Google + the most, as far as which one is most effective really depends upon the individual.

I know some people who get thousands of visitors through Instagram, while others find Pinterest more enjoyable to use.

If you don’t know which one to use, I would suggest you share your blog post first to Google +, then share it to ones that you know you will be apart of and interact with.

  3. Thank you, Michael, for your very informative article on how to make money online with a blog. I always knew of the potential to making money online, however, I continuously ran into the dead end, of excessive hype without the outcome.

Then I ran into this platform, and the professional element’s on board. Your defined structure in setting up a blog is very enriching, and understandable, thank you for that as well.

Also, the eight different ways to make money with a blog is great is great content. I was wondering if you have a thought on how to approach the first e-book within my blog, thank you, and I hope to see you soon, Jack.

    • Thanks for your kind words Jack I’m glad you enjoyed my post.

It’s true that while starting a blog is very exciting and can help you earn some good money online, it’s also takes a lot of work and time to make it work — which is why I think many people lose interest after doing it a few short months.

As far as adding a e-book into your blog, I would create a separate page within your blog where you can ask people to exchange their email for your book (once you have enough traffic coming to your site).

Once you have this page set up, you can then start linking people to the page within your post and reviews. Also you could even have a popup appear on your blog after a certain amount of time asking people to sign up for your e book.
