Is Blogging Dead In 2018? No, In Fact It’s Better Now Than It Ever Was

You hear it year after year that blogging is a thing of the past, and that there’s no point in creating one anymore.

I know many people today are either looking for a way to make money online, or build a blog around a subject there passionate about — which brings up the question is blogging dead in 2018?

I would argue to say that is far from dead. The only difference between now and back then, is you have to understand how to create helpful interesting content — instead of just writing about whatever and expect to get a ton of visitors to your site.

I personally see this a good thing because it means people that are lazy or aren’t up to date won’t see much success — while you’ll on the other hand will attract high quality visitors to your blog.

But how do make this happen?

Here’s some tips that will not only let you create a thriving blog in 2018, but create one that will last for years to come.

Make Your Blog About A Specific Topic

A common mistake I see many people make when first creating a blog, is they want to write about several different topics all at once.

On the surface I can see why this would make sense…

If you were someone who’s into sports, writing about things like baseball, basketball, and football would only seem natural. However what happens is most people get overwhelmed on “what to write about”, plus it makes it harder to rank your website within Google.

Therefore by making a blog about a specific topic like baseball, your chances of creating a successful blog greatly increase since you have a specific group of people you are trying to connect with.

This will help you get organic traffic much easier, eliminate the feeling of being overwhelmed on what to write about, and also give you the opportunity to become an authority in a very specific niche.

Give Yourself Enough Time To Get Results

be patient

Time and time again I will see people excited and feeling pumped about starting their blog in hopes that they will be able to make good money from it.

They’ll work hard for around 1-3 months, then around this time when they’re not getting the results they want they quit and move onto something else.

If you really want to create a successful blog, first and foremost DO NOT QUIT.

With that said, I would say on average it takes around 6-8 months to really start seeing your blog take off. Even by then you may not be getting the results you’re wanting — but trust me and just keep working on building your blog eventually you will start getting rankings and traffic.

I know a very successful blogger who worked for over a year until he started earning several thousand a month. Now if he were like most people and quit within 7 months, he would never of been able to achieve those kinds of results.

So in short work hard, be patient, and your blog will succeed — it just might take a little longer than you initially expected.

Write To Help People, Not For Search Engines

Write to help people

Everyone knows that in order to get good rankings withing Google and other search engines, you need to find good keywords to make this happen.

While yes these are very important to your overall success with a blog, many people tend to only write by stuffing keywords into all their post in hopes they will get good rankings.

What you have to realize is that when creating a blog you are creating it for people.

So in order to sell something, get people to sign up to an email list, or simply have them enjoy your blog and keep them coming back to it — make sure everything you do is for them.

When you create a website that helps, informs, and educates your visitors — they will naturally begin to trust you and see you as a reputable person that can know, like and trust.

Once you’ve gained their trust, then asking them to take action like buy a product you recommend becomes a very simple task.

Have A Blog That Is Mobile Friendly

Have a mobile friendly blog

In 2018 as more people gain access to mobile phones and tablets — it also means that more people are now searching on their mobile devices instead of a desktop.

Therefore to make sure you don’t miss out on all these mobile users, you have to make sure your blog has a responsive design. This will allow your blog to not only be viewed easily on desktops, but also mobile devices too.

Google has also noticed a shift in this direction, which also means if you don’t have a mobile friendly design — you more than likely will see a decline in your rankings as well.

Don’t worry about having to pay for these themes either, as WordPress comes with thousands of different themes to choose from (most of them being responsive). Just to be on the safe side though, I would double check before you go creating a blog with a theme that is outdated and useless.

Make Your Blog MoreThan Just A Place You Write Words On

Let me just first say that having your own blog is very important, and if anyone tells you otherwise they are obviously someone who doesn’t know what their talking about.

However also just creating a blog alone is also something you want to avoid. So what do you do?

Well after you have your blog set up and running, as time goes by you want to add different features to give your readers a better experience.

You could do things like:

  • Adding pictures, videos, and info graphics within your content
  • Creating an email newsletter that people can join
  • Have Social Media share buttons on your site
  • Adding your phone number so people can call and talk to you directly

The main thing you want to do is find ways to better interact with your audience.

Remember you are trying to build trust and help anyone who may land on your blog. Therefore by doing things like adding pictures and creating a newsletter, you can further help your readers and create a site they truly can come to love.

So Is Blogging A Thing Of The Past?

Of course it isn’t!

Thousands of people every year build blogs that in return have helped them earn a good income online. It is also still the most effective way to get high rankings within Google without ever having to spend a dime on advertising.

Still many people will “try” to create a blog, then quickly realize that it’s not something they can do overnight and expect great to results to occur.

To truly create a successful blog you need to be willing to work hard, have patience, and know how SEO works in order to get high rankings and visitors to your site.

Blogging really isn’t that hard to do, and it definitely is not dieing — however you will need to know what is and isn’t working today so you can avoid getting penalized by Google.

  1. Thanks a lot for the post!

This was really interesting and the main message I got was that consistency is key. I couldn’t agree more with this.

It’s very tempting to just give up after a couple of months and if you can break through this then you’re on your way. How many times a week would you recommend posting on your website??

    • Your correct that blogging is something that takes a lot of consistent work for several months before you start to get the kind of results you’re looking for.

Starting a business online is not like a regular job that you can expect results right away. I’ll admit the first 6-8 months is VERY hard as you put in so much work for so little in return.

However if you just keep at it and continue to write good helpful content — your work will pay off.

Now if you want to get results faster, it’s best to publish a post every day. While I know this can be hard for many people though, I would say 2-3 post a week will do just fine.

Remember though that consistency is key, so every week try to always make 2 or 3 blog post in with time you’ll start to get traffic and money. Of course if you can publish more then 3 then even better.

  2. Thank you for a very informative post as to whether or not blogging is dead in 2018. You also have some great tips on how to create a blog that will last for a long time.

I am in the process of creating a blog right now, and know that with time and some hard work I can make it into a profitable website.

    Have a great day!

    • You’re welcome Mike.

It’s true that with some hard work, patience, and the right training — you can start earning a regular income through your blog. The key though is to just keep at it.

Some people start seeing results within a month, some it takes 6 months, and for others it could even be a year. As long as you never give up and continue pumping out good quality content — Google will eventually notice you and you’ll start to get traffic as a result of it.

  3. Hey there,

I have to say I am kind of confused with the first point and it has been making my website somewhat difficult to work on.

I have chosen a niche that has so many topics that at times I feel like I should delete it and start a new one which is more targeted. Would you advise me to delete it or keep working on it but boil down to only topic?

    • It’s hard to say without knowing what your exact topic is. However unless you’re wanting to work on a completely different niche, I would simply just narrow down your existing topic and start writing blog post around your more specific topic.
