Chances are someone recently probably messaged you and asked if you’d buy a product their selling or if you would like to join their team.
Or you might have accidentally stumbled upon this company and just want to know more about it.
Whichever the case may be, you might be wondering is Doterra a scam or an amazing opportunity that will let you build a business online?
Well within my review today I’ll be covering what this company is selling, how much it costs to join, how much their members make on average a year, and more.
This way you decide if this company is something you would like to become a part of or not.
So with that said, let’s jump right into things here.
Quick Summary Of Doterra
Price: $105.00 – $570.00
Rating: 2 out of 5
What Is Doterra?
Doterra is an MLML company that operates in the essential oil niche.
It was launched back in 2008 by a man named David Stirling, who believe it or not was actually a member of another company called Young Living which also sells essential oils.
Now I’m not 100% sure why he decided to leave that company to create Doterra here — but my guess is he either thought he could sell a better product, that he could make more money, or a combination of them both.
In any case, he claims the goal of this company here is to prove the purest and highest quality essential oils “one drop at a time” — while also giving you the chance to build a full time business online.
But can this company actually help you do this, or is this just another average MLM company that won’t get you anywhere.
Well I won’t deny that you could easily make money if you joined this company — however as you’ll find out in a second I don’t think it’s going to be anything to write home about.
What Does Doterra Sell?
Doterra sells actually quite a few different products on their website, but as I mentioned earlier their main focus is essential oils.
At the time of writing this review they currently have 68 essential oils for sale on their website ranging in price from $13.33 – $366.67.
And some of the other products you’ll find on their site are items like…
- Weight loss supplements
- And more
Now how effective all these other products are I can’t say — but my guess is they aren’t all that special, and more than likely you could find other companies / brands selling almost the exact same things.
Doterra Compensation Plan
One of the things I really hate about MLM companies is their compensation plans usually are very long and confusing.
Luckily though Doterra’s plan here is only 3 pages long.
But if you’ve never read one yourself, then trying to understand all the numbers can easily give you a headache — because I know it has to me on several occasions.
So to help you out, I’ll try to simplify things out for you so that you can understand it better.
There are twelve affiliate ranks in the Doterra’s compensation plan, which gets progressively harder as you start to climb up.
Here’s the name of all 12 ranks…
- Wellness Advocate
- Blue Diamond
- Presidential Diamond
You’ll earn 25% commission on all products you sell to customers. So if you sell $200 dollars worth of items, then you’ll make $50.
This company here uses a unilevel structure within their compensation plan. This means that everyone you recruit will be tied directly beneath you.
So if you personally recruit someone they will be on your first level, then if someone on your first level recruits someone they will be on your second level, and so on and so forth.
Now Doterra levels only go 7 levels deep, and according to what rank you are will determine how much money you will earn.
You can see the different percentages you’ll make right here…
- Wellness Advocate – 2% on level 1
- Manager – 2% on level 1 and 3% on level 2
- Director – 2% on level 1, 3% on level 2 and 5% on level 3
- Executive – 2% on level 1, 3% on level 2 and 5% on levels 3 and 4
- Elite – 2% on level 1, 3% on level 2, 5% on levels 3 and 4 and 6% on level 5
- Premier – 2% on level 1, 3% on level 2, 5% on levels 3 and 4 and 6% on levels 5 and 6% on level 6
- Silver or higher – 2% on level 1, 3% on level 2, 5% on levels 3 and 4, 6% on levels 5 and 6, and 7% on level 7
There are also a few different bonuses you can earn if you sell so many products per month and recruit a certain number of people.
For example one of their bonuses is called Power of 3 Team Bonus.
How this works is you and anyone you recruit must sign up to have a monthly auto-ship order of 100 PV — which is a combination of products you buy and sells you make.
And on top of this, you and your team must also generate a total of 600 PV a month to qualify for this bonus.
Now if you meet the above requirements, you can earn the following amount of money…
- If you recruit 3 people you earn $50 that month.
- If the 3 people you recruited go out and recruit their own people you earn $250 that month.
- Then last but not least, if those 9 people go out and recruit people you earn $1,500 that month.
Now again if you are still kind of confused don’t worry.
Just remember that to make money with this company you either need to sell their products to make money, or build a team. Of course though building a team is how you will make the big bucks.
But if you would like a more detailed explanation as to how this company’s compensation plan works, you can view the entire thing right here.
How Much Does It Cost?
To join Doterra, you will have to buy one of their following kits which are as followed:
- Simple Solutions Kit = $105.00
- Healthy Start Kit = $160.00
- Healthy Habits Kit = $195.00
- Healthy Essentials Kit = $249.00
- Healthy Home Kit = $350.00
- Natural Solutions Kit = $570.00
Now the only real difference between these kits is the more you pay then the more items you’ll get — which you can then use to either sell and make money or help you recruit people to build your team.
What I Like About It
- Essentials oils is a popular product right now
As you can see within the picture right here, essential oils started to become popular around 2015, and it seems to still be going quite strong.
This means that there’s a good chance that you know several people who might be interested in this product — which means it will be easier to sell them and make money.
- Essential oils have been proven to offer many positive benefits
According to healthline.com and other sources, essential oils offer several amazing benefits when used such as…
- Improve mood
- Better memory
- Better sleep
- Relieves sore muscles
- Reduces anxiety
- Improve brain function
- Prevents acne
- Provide anti aging properties
- And more
Now I wouldn’t be surprised that this is the reason essential oils grew in popularity so fast and remain popular — because of people realizing how helpful they are.
And if you are really curious about essential oils and all the good things they can do, you can watch this 11 minute video where it goes into greater detail on which oils provide what beneficial properties.
What I Don’t Like About It
- This company is operating in a very competitive niche
With essential oils being such a popular product, this means there are companies everywhere offline and online selling them.
And just about every single company you go to are going to say they are selling the “finest and purest” oils known to mankind.
So unless you have purchased and used Doterra’s oils personally, and can show specifically what makes them better — I think you’re going to find it hard to make a lot of sales.
- Their oils are very expensive
And to make matters worse, this company has not only put themselves in a competitive market — but they have made the prices of their oils EXTREMELY high.
For example when I was reviewing another company called Young Living ( which is another essential oils company ) — I saw that their most expensive oil ( rose oil ) was selling for $250 dollars.
Then when I came to Doterra here and looked up to see how much their rose oil was going for, I saw that it was going for $366 and almost chocked!
So again my question is how are you going to convince people to spend an extra $100 on these products, when they can go elsewhere and get them far cheaper?
Because I don’t know about you, but if I had a choice to buy from one of these two companies — I’d definitely pick the one that would save me money.
- You will have to bother your loved ones and friends
Since Doterra uses an MLM business model within their plan, this means the only way you can make a lot of money is by recruiting people and building large teams.
Now 99% of the time companies like this will tell you to do this by asking people that you know — like your friends, family, and neighbors.
And I can tell you having had this happen to me personally several times, it’s not fun. Because usually someone’s feelings get hurt and it can take a while until you two aren’t upset at each other.
Is Doterra A Scam?
Doterra is definitely not a scam.
They have a very popular product they are selling, and from what I saw in their compensation plan quite a few people were making some money through this company.
But with that said, their products are super expensive — and unless you already have a large following on social media or know how to generate traffic online, I think you’ll find that building a team is extremely hard to do.
So that’s why if you are looking to join this company just to make money I think you’re better off looking elsewhere.
Is Doterra A Pyramid Scheme?
Also technically Doterra is not a Pyramid Scheme because you can sell their products directly to people to generate an income.
And for a company to be a Pyramid Scheme the company’s members ONLY make money by recruiting people into the program.
However with that said, I think this company might secretly be one due to their Power of 3 Team Bonus.
Because if you remember, you make up to $1,500 / month or $18,000 a year without ever having to sell one single item!
Which again if you can make a lot of money purely on recruiting people rather than selling products — then the company you’re involved with is a pyramid scheme.
So I’ll let you make the final decision as to whether you think this company is or is not one.
And if you want a simple and more detailed explanation of what a Pyramid Scheme is — you can watch this short 2 minute video here.
My Final Thoughts
At the end of the day I think Doterra is a legit business, with a good product attached to their company.
However with that said, as I’ve mentioned several times already within my article the only way you will make a good income is by building a team.
This means that in order to be successful you have to have good people skills, know how to handle rejection well, and most importantly be able to teach your downline how to market this company.
Because you can work your butt off each month recruiting hundreds of people into your team — but if none of them have the skills or motivation to sell these oils then you’ll end up making nothing.
This is why I prefer affiliate marketing to generate an income online.
There’s no recruiting whatsoever, you can sell whatever products you want, and you don’t have to spend a dime on advertising.
You simply create helpful content that points people towards products they’re already looking for — then you get paid a commission each time they buy something.
