Is Shaklee A Pyramid Scheme Or Legit Multivitamin MLM Company? Find Out The Answer Here.

Hey what’s up?

I’m guessing you’re here because you heard about this company online, through the radio, or maybe one of your friends asked you to join their team.

So now you’re wanting to know is Shaklee a Pyramid Scheme or a legit online opportunity.

Now before I go any further, I first want to congratulate you for taking the time out of your day to do some research because that’s how you find out what are and are not scams.

Therefore within my review today I’ll be telling you everything you need to know about this company so that by the time you’re done reading you will know if this opportunity is right for you.

So with that said, let’s jump right into it and see what this is all about!

Quick Summary Of Shaklee

Name: Shaklee

Website: Shaklee.com

Price: $49.95 or $208.95 + $100 worth of products every month

Rating: 3 out of 5

What Is Shaklee?

Shaklee is an MLM company within this health / weightloss niche.

It started way back in 1956 by a guy name Forrest Shaklee who supposedly made and sold the first multivitamin in the United States.

Since then this company has grown to be one of the most popular and well known MLM businesses around the world selling hundreds of products — but still having their main focus on vitamins.

And they say that their products not only will help you feel and look better, but it will also offer you “a unique chance” to be your own boss, on your own terms, and basically do what you want when you want.

Now you’re probably skeptical and wondering if this claim is really true, or if this is just another sales pitch to get you to join this company.

Well I’m here to tell you that yes it is very possible to make money through this company, but the chances of it happening probably aren’t as high as Shaklee here makes it out to be.

I’ll explain more why this is in a minute.

First though let me discuss a bit more about this company, that way if you do happen to join it you’ll know what it is they are actually selling.

Tired of building teams and selling products you don’t like?
Check out my #1 rated product online that can help you make money without recruiting anyone.

What Does Shaklee Sell?

Similar to other companies I’ve reviewed in the past such as Level Thrive and Plexus, Shaklee here sells products to mostly help people live healthier lives and lose weight.

At the time of writing this review, one of the things they are heavily promoting on their site right now is something called the Prove It Challenge.

It’s a package that is supposed to make you feel healthier, more energized, and more focused within just 30 days by providing you with weight loss shakes, healthy cleanse pills, and more.

And they say if you don’t feel “amazing” after doing this challenge, then you can get your money back.

You can watch this short 3 minute video that talks more about it here.

Now as I said earlier, this company has grown quite large over the years and they now are selling a wide variety of products on their site.

Here are the different categories and items you’ll find if you head over there.

Is Shaklee A Pyramid Scheme - what they sell

Nutrition

With this being their main category, they sell a wide variety of vitamins and shakes to help you with your bones, eyes, energy, sleep, and more.

Weight Loss

Like the name suggests, this section sells meals, shakes, teas, and other items to help you lose weight.

Beauty

Believe it or not, Shaklee here also has a beauty section that sells anti aging creams, products to hydrate your eyes, different kinds of makeup, and more.

Sports

Within this section, they have products that are geared specifically for people who play sports to help them stay hydrated and recover faster.

Green Home

Then last but not least, they have products that are all natural for your house so that you can wash your dishes, do your laundry, and other things of this nature.

Now how effective all these products are I can’t say, but according to their site they have 71 patents pending, and over 120 publishes scientific papers.

Again whether this is true or not I’m not sure — but a lot of people seem to like what this company is selling, plus they’ve been around a long time. So I’m sure there’s some truth to what they say.

Shaklee Compensation Plan

Something I dread doing every time I review an MLM company is having to read their compensation plans.

This is because they are long, boring, and extremely confusing. So by the time I actually get a grasp on how it works, I am mentally exhausted and usually have a headache.

So I will try to simplify how the entire thing works for you that way you can understand how you’ll make money with this company without having to go through the same trouble I did.

Affiliate Ranks

Within this company there are 12 ranks you can obtain which are as follows…

  1. Affiliate
  2. Director
  3. Senior Director
  4. Coordinator
  5. Senior Coordinator
  6. Executive Coordinator
  7. Senior Executive Coordinator
  8. Key Coordinator
  9. Senior Key Coordinator
  10. Master Coordinator
  11. Senior Master Coordinator
  12. Presidential Master Coordinator

Now in order to actually go up in rank with this company, you have to meet some pretty crazy expectations.

For example as a Director, all you have to do is purchase $100 worth of products a month and have you and your team make around 2,000 sales a month.

However to become a Presidential Master Coordinator, you need to recruit 8 Directors, 2 Master Coordinators or higher, and have you and your team make around 500,000 sales a month.

So again as you can clearly see it’s extremely hard to get to the higher ranks, and it’s actually so difficult that hardly anyone ever gets to rank 3.

Retail Commissions

Depending on how many items you personally sell a month will determine how much you make.

Here is the stats of how many items you’ll need to sell, and how much you’ll earn based off of these sales:

Is Shaklee A Pyramid Scheme - retail commissions

  • 250 – 499 sales = $10 – $20
  • 500 – 999 sales = $40 – $80
  • 1,000 – 1,499 sales = $120 – $180
  • 1,500 – 1,999 sales = $210 – $280
  • 2,000 – 2,999 sales = $400 – $599
  • 3,000 + sales = $600 +

Residual Commissions

This company uses a unilevel structure within their plan.

This means that when you personally recruit someone they will be on your first level. Then when someone on your first level recruits someone they will be on your 2nd level, and so on and so forth.

Is Shaklee A Pyramid Scheme - Unilevel compensation structure

Now Shaklee here only goes 6 levels deep, and based on what rank you are will determine how much money you’ll earn from your team.

Here are percentages of what you’ll earn based again on what rank you are, starting with Senior Directors:

  • Senior Directors = 9%
  • Coordinator = 10%
  • Senior Coordinator = 11%
  • Executive and Senior Executive Coordinator = 16%
  • Key Coordinator and Senior Key Coordinator = 20%
  • Master Coordinator = 23%
  • Senior Master Coordinator and Presidential Master Coordinator = 26%

Bonuses

There’s also several bonuses you can earn through this company such as the …

  • Infinity Bonus
  • Matching Bonus
  • Prove It And Share It Bonus Program

Of course there are strict qualifications you have to do in order to obtain these bonuses, and they usually also have to be done within a certain amount of time.

Now I could go on and bore you with all the details on how you can earn each and every one of these — but instead you can either read their entire compensation plan right here, or watch this 12 minute video to learn more about it.

How Much Does It Cost?

To join Shaklee, you can sign up in two different ways.

You can either pay $49.95 to get their distributor pack which gives you distributor tools, and access to their online store for 3 months.

Or you can join by buying their Prove It Challenge for $208.95, which gives you the Distributor pack and all the products you need to do the 30 day challenge.

Plus you’ll have to buy $100 worth of products every month.

What I Like About It

  • This company has been around for a very long time

On average MLM companies last about 5 years at best. So if you see a company last 10 years or more, then you know that it’s probably legit.

So the mere fact that Shaklee here has been in business for over 60 years is absolutely crazy — and just shows that they know what they are doing.

So whether you want to join this opportunity or not, it doesn’t look like it’s going to disappear anytime soon.

  • They sell a lot of products

Another common statistic about MLM companies is that they usually only have 1 – 5 items for sale. So your customers really don’t have much to choose from when you are trying to sell something.

Shaklee on the other hand has easily over 200 products people can choose from. And these products range from health / fitness, beauty, and clean living.

Is Shaklee A Pyramid Scheme - they sell a lot of products

So if you try to market this company, it’s safe to say that people will probably find something that they are interested in.

  • Shaklee’s products are backed up with a 100% guarantee

Shaklee says if you don’t like their products for whatever reason, you can get your money back no questions asked.

Is Shaklee A Pyramid Scheme - 100% money back guarantee

So this just shows that this company really believes in their products and are confident that they not only work but that you will love what they have to offer you.

Plus this guarantee keeps your mind at ease knowing that you can get your money back if whatever you bought doesn’t work out.

What I Don’t Like About It

  • You have to pay a monthly fee to join this company

Instead of having to pay just a couple hundred dollars to join Shaklee here, you also are required to spend $100 on their products each month to remain active.

Is Shaklee A Pyramid Scheme - pay $100 a month in reoccurring commissions

This means that you will have to pay at the very least $1,000 dollars a year on this company. And this is not even counting what you will probably have to spend to market their products or to get people to join your team.

  • Their income disclosure is very misleading

When you look at Shaklee’s income disclosure, you’ll see that people wh obtained rank 2 ( Director ) make on average $10,000 a year. And if you obtain rank 12 ( Presidential Master Coordinator ) you can make on average $500,000 a year.

Is Shaklee A Pyramid Scheme - average annual income

However they are leaving out one very crucial stat here. They fail to tell you how many people have actually obtained these ranks.

And I can guarantee you that there are probably very few people that make it to Director rank — and the percentage of people who made it to rank 12 is basically nonexistent.

So don’t get your hopes too high when you see these stats, because as I mentioned within their compensation plan it’s extremely difficult to go up in ranks and stay there.

  • You’ll have to bother your friends and family to market this company

Another reason I dislike MLM companies is they teach you to market their company by asking your friends, family, and co workers to buy your products or join your team — which you can clearly see within this pic here.

Is Shaklee A Pyramid Scheme - have to tell your friends to make an income

Now this not only is a very ineffective way to market a company / build a business — because there’s only so many people you actually know.

But the worst part about it is you run a very high chance of ruining your relationship with these people because you will be almost begging them to buy products or join an opportunity they have no interest in.

And believe me I’ve had several of my friends do this to me, and it’s not a pleasant feeling at all.

  • The chances of you earning a good income are extremely low

Kind of going back to when I was talking about their income disclosure, it’s been proven that 99% of everyone who joins an MLM company ends up making very little or worse go into debt.

This is because recruiting people and building large teams is a very difficult task to do.

And unless you are someone who has a very outgoing personality and also knows how to find thousands of people each month you can market too, then you’ll simply end up failing.

Is Shaklee A Scam?

So the big question that you’ve probably been wanting to know all along. Is Shaklee a scam?

Well I’m happy to tell you that Shaklee is not a scam, but rather a legit company that sells what seems to be high quality products.

However with that said, I do not think this is an opportunity that you should be wasting your time and money on.

This is because the chances of you actually earning a good income are so slim that you would probably have better odds of winning money on a scratch off.

So while it’s totally up to you on what you want to do, I personally would not recommend you join this company.

Is Shaklee A Pyramid Scheme?

You’ll also be glad to hear that Shaklee is not a Pyramid Scheme.

This is due to the fact that you can sell their products directly to people to make money. But if it were a Pyramid Scheme the only way you could make an income is by recruiting people.

Now it’s no secret that to make the big bucks you will need to build a large team, but at the end of the day that does not make this company a Pyramid Scheme.

And to prove my point, you can watch this short 2 minute video that goes over in more detail on what a Pyramid Scheme is and how you can spot one.

My Final Thoughts

Shaklee is definitely a legit company that seems to sell high quality products that people enjoy. Otherwise I doubt they would have lasted as long as they did.

Now with that said, I don’t think this is a good opportunity to join simple because they are using an MLM business model.

This means that in order to be successful, you have to recruit thousands of people each month and then teach these same people how to market this company.

Otherwise you will end up making no money at all.

And I don’t know about you, but I feel like having my entire income be determined on whether or not people in my team have the skills or motivation to succeed is simply dumb

This is why I prefer affiliate marketing to generate an income online.

There’s no recruiting whatsoever, you can sell whatever products you want, and you don’t have to spend a dime on advertising.

You simply create helpful content that points people towards products they’re already looking for  — then you get paid a commission each time they buy something.

  1. Hello there,

It’s really nice to be here and I have to say I’m really pleased to see such a wonderful article after searching what seems like forever for an honest review of this business.

I really love the honesty in your article which made it so good to read. I have had many bad experiences with pyramid schemes in the past, and it’s not something I want to try again.

    • Thanks for your comment Justin, and I’m glad my review could help you out. 🙂

Also I don’t blame you for being tired of MLM companies / pyramid schemes, because frankly it’s extremely hard to earn a good income with this business model.

However if you would like to learn a far easier and better way of making money online, I’d suggest you check out my favorite program online called Wealthy Affiliate.

They teach you basically how to create websites and promote other people’s products / services as an affiliate. And the cool thing about this program is you can join it for free and “test it out” to see if this is or is not something you would like.

If you would like more information about it and see some awesome success stories it has produced, then you can read my entire review here.

  2. Hi Michael,

I always get doubly worried when you mention an MLM scheme that sells health and beauty products. This is because MLMs tend to have a poor reputation, and the amount of time and effort you put into the business doesn’t seem worth it.

The health and beauty markets are saturated with companies that make over the top claims that do not stand up to scrutiny. I am glad that you are very honest with your reviews, even though it may give you a headache. Age does not mean that it is a business worth investing in.

    Thanks

    Antonio

    • I think you made a great point Antonio in saying just because a company has been around a long time doesn’t necessarily make it a good one to join.

All this really entails is that they have been able to generate enough profit to stay in business, usually because people like what they are selling and are willing to buy it.

And that’s great in all if you want for customers, but for people wanting to join an MLM company like Shaklee here is a completely different story.

This is because no matter how good a product the company may be selling, at the end of the day you have to know how to recruit thousands of people month and build a large team in order to succeed.

And this requires either you already having a large online following, or having the skill to generate traffic online.

Now I’m going to assume most people don’t have millions of people following them on Facebook or Instagram — so learning how to get traffic online is the only other option.

And out of all the programs I’ve come across online in my career, Wealthy Affiliate is by far the best program for teaching people exactly how to do this.

I wont go into the full details since you can read my review about them here, but I will say that they are free to join, don’t cost a lot to become a premium member, and have easy to follow training that WORKS.

So I say this to anyone who is looking to make money online or wants to learn how to promote their own business better to give WA a shot — because you literally have nothing to lose since it’s free to join. 🙂
