What Is Udemy?
Udemy is kind of like an online college — as it allows people to learn a variety of new skills and expand their knowledge in just about anything they want to know.
Their library has over 80,000 courses that range from personal development, business, music, health and fitness and more.
Now if you’ve come here wondering is Udemy a scam, then I assure you that it is definitely not.
To further elaborate why this is, let me explain exactly how it works, how it can help you out, and give you an estimate on how much money you can make with them.
How Does Udemy Work?
When you join Udemy, you can go one of two different routs.
1) You can either become a student and learn more about a particular subject.
2) Or you can become an instructor and get paid to create courses within their platform.
Now what makes Udemy so unique, is that everything you learn within this community is created by the instructors that join this website as well.
For example if you’re good at playing the piano, you can become an instructor and create an in depth course teaching people also how to play the piano.
Then when someone signs up to Udemy in search on how to become a better pianist — they can then purchase your course so they can learn how to do it.
To give you a better understanding, let me describe what it’s like being a student and instructor in more detail here.
Being A Student At Udemy
To become a student at Udemy is completely free. All you have to do is give them your name and email address in order to sign up.
Once inside, as I mentioned earlier you’ll have access to thousands of different courses to choose from. As of right now, there are a total of 15 categories you can choose from — which all break up into smaller sub categories and topics.
By clicking on any course, you’ll get a brief outline describing what it is, how much it cost, and what’s included within the course.
Now many courses within Udemy are free, but others will also cost you money. This all depends on how much the person who made it wants to charge for his work.
But even with the highest course costing you $200.00 — this is still much cheaper than going to a college, and also cheaper than most programs online that usually want you to spend thousands on their product / course.
Overall I think this can really benefit a great number of people who want a fairly inexpensive way to learn how to do something better.
Being A Instructor At Udemy
Being an instructor at Udemy, is where you’ll have the chance to earn money by creating a course to help people out.
Becoming an instructor is also very easy within this platform. All you have to do is click create a course, then Udemy will walk you through the different stages and give you tips and tools on how to create a proper course.
Now even though it’s fairly simple and easy to create a course — getting it accepted is a whole different story. Udemy reviews each course very carefully, and recommends each course has the following items.
- At least 30 minutes of video content
- At least 5 separate lectures
- Valuable educational content
- HD video quality (720p or 1080p)
- Audio that comes out of both channels and is synced to video
- Audio quality that is not distracting to students
So basically you need to create a well-educated course that is easy to read, watch, and listen too — and should in no way be trying to scam someone or teach them wrong information.
If you want, you can click here to read “how to create my Udemy course” — that way you can get a better understanding as to what they expect of you.
And again anyone can do this (even you), and don’t think because you’re not an “expert” at something means you can’t create an educational course.
Just as long as you know how to do something that’s probably difficult for most other people, and you’re able to put this information into an easy to understand learning course — then there’s a good chance a lot of people will want to buy your product.
Quick note: With being an instructor, your end goal is of course to make money — however you have to realize you’re going to be competing against thousands of other people within Udemy’s community.
Therefore you’ll want to create a few free courses — that way people can get to know you better, and you can also grow your brand at the same time.
Then as time goes on, you can start adding a price to your courses and start earning some money for your hard work.
Is Udemy A Scam?
Udemy is definitely not a scam, as you can make some good money if you take your time and create helpful and well constructed courses for other people to learn from.
How much money though ultimately boils down to how hard you want to work for it. If you’re willing to stick around for a while and create several good courses — then you could probably make some real good money.
However If you just go on there and make one or two courses — then you’ll end up probably with nothing.
But all in all I would say the average person makes anywhere from a few hundreds to a few thousand a month with Udemy.
Again you could probably make a lot more, or a lot less. It all just depends on how hard you’re willing to work for it, how good of a course you can make, and possibly what category you’re trying to create a course in.
What I Like About It
- Lots of free courses to take
- The courses that do cost money are very reasonable
- There’re hundreds if not thousands of courses to choose from
- Each course has gone through a strict review to provide high quality training to people
- If you become an instructor and create good course — you can make some good money with them
What I Don’t Like About It
- It’s up to you to study and learn the material — as no one is going to hold your hand and help teach you it
- It may take several months if not longer to start earning a decent income, since there’s so much competition
- There’s no great way to communicate with other student’s and instructors within the community
Who Is Udemy For?
Udemy is great for anyone that wants to learn a new skill or gain more knowledge in a particular field — and doesn’t need someone by their side explaining things every step of the way.
Also it’s great for people that love teaching, as it can help you earn a good amount of money online — simply by sharing your expertise with other people in the world.
So whether you want to earn some extra cash online, or pay some money to learn more about a particular subject — Udemy is a safe and well-made website that can help you out.
My Final Rating – Is Udemy Worth Joining?
4 out of 5
Udemy is defiantly worth joining, as it provides a great place to learn and earn an extra income online.
However there’s still certain guidelines you have to follow if you want to be accepted — and the amount of money you make basically boils down to how popular your subject is.
So even though you can make good money with Udemy — I’d much rather go a different route and create an online business around a topic I’m passionate about. This will allow me to…
- Make more money with my personal business online
- Create a training course with zero restrictions or guidelines
- Build a business around ANY subject matter I want
- Have full ownership over my website — unlike courses created within Udemy which is something they will own
You can learn exactly how to do this too through a program called Wealthy Affiliate.
They too are a massive online training center (with hundreds of courses available), and has a community of thousands of people all willing to help you build and grow a profitable business online.
