You might be wondering is Young Living a scam either because someone has invited you to join their team, or that you simply just want to know if this company can help you earn some extra money online.
Whatever the case may be, within my review I’ll be showing you what this company sells, how their compensation plan works, how much the average person is earning, and more.
So with that said, let’s get into it!
Quick Summary Of Young Living
Name: Young Living
Price: $35 – $165
Rating: 3 out of 5
What Is Young Living?
Young Living an MLM ( Multi Level Marketing ) company that specializes in selling essential oils.
It started back in 1993 by a man named Donald Gary Young, and is still going strong 27 years later — which is VERY rare with this type of business model so I have to hand it to them there.
Now they say their mission is to enhance and empower lives around the world by sharing the unique benefits essential oils have to offer. Also they say you’ll be able to build a full time business by selling their products to people online.
But can you really make a good income selling oils like they claim?
Well I won’t say it’s impossible — but let’s just say the odds aren’t looking too good for you as you’re about to see.
What Does Young Living Sell?
As I mentioned earlier, Young Living’s main product is essential oils.
Now just from browsing their website for a few minutes, I can tell you that they have a huge collection of oils to choose from.
Some of their flavors are….
- Cinnamon Bark
- And more
Now Young Living prides itself in its “seed to seal” process which is supposed to ensure you are receiving the oils exactly the way nature intended.
Now whether their oils are truly better than most other company’s out there I can’t say for sure, but I will say that some of their products are quite expensive with several costing more than $200 a bottle!
So I hope for their sake what they claim is true, and that the money you’ll be spending is well worth it.
Young Living Compensation Plan
Usually most MLM’s compensation plans are several pages long and can take hours to decipher to learn how much you’ll be making.
However with Young Living here, I was pleased to see that theirs was pretty straight forward and you could read the whole thing within about a minute.
So I will just cover the main highlights on their plan to show you how it works.
There are ten affiliate ranks you can obtain with this company.
- Basic member
- Senior Star
- Crown Diamond
- Royal Crown Diamond
Basically the higher up you go within the ranks the more money you can make. However this is much easier said than done — and VERY few people ever get past the Star rank ( # 2 ).
With every product you sell to a customer, you’ll earn a 24% commission.
So if you’re selling a $50 bottle, you’ll be earning a $12 profit.
Young Living uses a unilevel structure within their compensation plan.
This basically means that everyone you recruit into your team will be directly underneath you — thus allowing you to earn a percentage of what they all make.
Now you can only build a team 5 levels deep, plus you can only make 13% – 46.5% of your team’s commissions based on what rank you are.
For example if you are a basic member you’ll earn 13% of your team’s commissions, while if you are an Executive member you’ll earn 25%.
Now besides earning money from selling oils directly to customers or building large teams — Young Living also pays its members extra “bonuses” for doing certain activities.
For example, with their fast start bonus you can earn 20% commission on a newly recruited affiliate’s orders ( during the first three months of their membership ).
Or with their starter kit bonus, you can earn $25 if the person you recruited buys a premium starter kit within the same month they joined.
Now I could list several other ways you can earn money through this company, but instead of wasting your time by writing them all, you can view their whole compensation plan here plus watch this 6 minute video talking about their plan.
How Much Does It Cost?
To become an affiliate of Young Living, you’ll have to buy one of their starter kits which range from $35 all the way to $165.
The cool thing however is that this is just a 1 time fee, and there are no monthly payments you’re required to pay.
What I Like About It
- It’s not expensive to join
I’ve reviewed hundreds of MLM products in my career like Plexus here, and I’d say about 95% of them come with a monthly cost attached to them.
However I like that the fact Young Living does not ask you to pay a monthly fee to be a member of their company — but instead you just have to buy one of their kits with their most expensive one being $165 ( which is rather cheap ).
- They have a wide range of essential oils to choose from
The fact that I could scroll for about 10 minutes through all their oils and still not have seen them all was very impressive.
And I think having a huge selection of products to promote makes it easier to make money with this company, as there seems to be a scent for just about every person out there.
What I Don’t Like About It
- The chances of you earning a good income are VERY low
Now if you were hoping to make a lot of money with this company, then you might want to think again.
In 2018 around 98% of people were making $4,000 or less a year, then in 2019 98% of people who joined this company were now making close to $3,000 or less a year.
Basically this is telling us that people are making less and less money each year that they are a part of this company.
So unless you really like essential oils and already have a huge audience you can market too, the odds of you earning a good income aren’t looking that good
- Their products are very expensive
Now I have never used many essential oils before, but for a small 5 ml bottle to cost $251 is just plain crazy I think.
And if you spend just a few minutes looking around their website, you’ll see that there are a lot of them that are going for $100 dollars and more!
So while they may have a wide selection to choose from, I think the prices attached to their oils are probably going to steer many customers away.
Is Young Living A Scam?
Young Living is definitely not a scam.
They have a huge selection of essential oils to choose from, they’ve been around for a long time ( almost 30 years ), and their compensation plan pays pretty good retail prices.
And if you are someone who loves essential oils and knows a good bit about them, then you might be able to sell several of these bottles to people you know.
However if you are just in it for the money and have no knowledge about oils or ever been a part of an MLM before, then I would look elsewhere.
The income disclosure alone I think would be all the proof you’d need to come to this conclusion.
So again the choice is up to you, but in the end I would say unless you really enjoy oils and love talking to people and building large teams — you’re better off looking elsewhere to earn an income online.
My Final Thoughts
Even though I think Young Living is a legit MLM company with an impressive selection of oils to choose from, I don’t think you’ll make a good income through this opportunity.
I say this because one of their products are very expensive, two their income disclosure is showing people making less money each year, and lastly it’s been proven that over 99% of people who join an MLM company either make no money or end up going into debt.
Plus who wants to spend their days bothering their own friends, family, and acquaintances to buy these expensive products or worse join their team and do the same thing?
I know I sure don’t.
This is why I prefer affiliate marketing to generate an income online.
There’s no recruiting whatsoever, you can sell whatever products you want, and you don’t have to spend a dime on advertising.
You simply create helpful content that will point people towards products that they already are looking for — then get paid a commission each time they buy something.
