What Is Shiny Object Syndrome And How You Can Avoid It? Find The Answer Here.

One of the biggest problems online marketeers have to face and overcome is how to deal with SOS, or “Shiny Object Syndrome.”

Because when you fall victim to this marketing tactic, it’s almost as if someone has hypnotized you and made you throw all logic and reason out the window.

I’ll get more into that in a minute.

But due to this being so powerful in making people quite frankly make dumb decisions, I want to explain in detail what is shiny object syndrome and how you can avoid it so it won’t take control of your life.

So with that said, let me jump right into things here…

What Exactly Is Shiny Object Syndrome?

Shiny Object Syndrome is a condition or feeling you get when see something that sounds so amazing, that you drop everything you’re doing and blindly buy it or start doing whatever is ask you to do without even giving it a second thought.

Kind of like if a dog was eating a juicy steak and all of a sudden saw a squirrel run out in front of him, he would immediately drop his food and chase that squirrel up a tree.

Now SOS happens to people all the time in the world in a variety of different ways like wanting to buy the newest car even if you don’t have the money, or wanting the latest running shoes because their suppose to make you run faster.

But the place I’ve seen this happen more than anywhere else is in the online world, because newbies are bombarded with one amazing opportunity after the next and so they keep buying all these products that end up not helping them at all.

And to show you what I mean, here’s some examples that will help you see why SOS is so easy to fall victim too.

3 Common Examples Of The Shiny Object Syndrome

Again SOS can happen in just about anything and everything you do within the world, but seeing as most people tend care about either about health, their love life, or making more money — I’ll give you an example of each one of these.

1) Health

SOS dealing with health

Within this pic, you can see that the “dangling carrot” is being able to lose body fat NOW without doing any work.

And the thing is people will buy this up in a second without knowing how it works, what’s in the pill, or if there are any side effects.

All they see if that it will help them lose fat fast, so they will spend money on it.

2) Happiness

SOS dealing with happiness

Who doesn’t want to get back with an ex that they miss right?

Well advertisements like this tug at your heart strings and make it sounds like they will help you quickly and easily get the love of your life back — so people will inhale this information like it’s the bible.

But what they don’t take a moment to think about, is there’s no possible way a book or series of articles can possibly know the person you want to be with let alone the circumstances as to why you two broke up in the first place.

So what they say might not apply to you what so ever.

But again all people can read is “get your ex back quickly” — so they without a second thought will pay to hear what this person has to say even it’s wrong.

3) Wealth

SOS dealing with wealth

Then last but not least, is the wealth category.

Now when you find ways to make money online, seeing statements like in the pic above is VERY common and very tempting to buy.

Because who wouldn’t want to make around $22,000 dollars their first week online? I know I would!

And the thought of being able to do this with little to no work ( like the advertisement says ) — makes people’s eyes turn into dollar signs and again throw reason out the window.

But if people would simply ask them self is if this is true, why isn’t everyone doing it and rich — they would see why this product is worthless.

But the strong desire of wanting to make a lot of money quickly online makes people push this question into the back of their minds and get out the credit cards instead.

So How Do Online Marketers Make You Fall For This?

So again since SOS mainly preys upon people trying to make money online ( and the fact that my blog is all about helping you generate an income online ) — I’m going to reveal how these sly marketers trick you into buying their products.

First and foremost they try to emotionally relate to whatever problem you are dealing with.

I would say that the majority of the products I review online, there’s always someone telling some sort of sob story as to how they had it rough in the past.

They’ll say things like they were poor growing up with no education, they tried to make money online in the past and failed, or that they were scammed several times and were ready to give up.

Now while it seems they are doing this to sympathize with you, actually what they are doing is trying to make you think with your emotions instead of your brain.

And as soon as they have done this….

They give you some over exaggerated claims as to how good their product is.

You’ll see many of these MMO products make claims that you can make thousands of dollars by simply by buying their product and pressing a few buttons.

And here’s a few of my latest reviews I’ve done so you can get a better picture as to what I mean:

But with a few fake screen shots and testimonials, many of these products can become very convincing.

They give you little to no information as to how their product works.

Rather than these products telling you how their system works, what you’ll be buying, and also what you’ll have to do on a daily basis to become successful — they instead just prolong their sales page / video with long drawn out stories and a bunch of screen shots showing how much money you can make.

Of course they do this because 90% of the time what they’re selling does not work, therefore instead of giving you solid evidence as to why you should buy their product — they have to resort to other tactics like giving hyped up income claims and falsifying how easy it is to make money online.

They tell you to act now before it’s too late.

Last but not least, marketers like to try and make you think a lot of times that if you don’t hurry up and buy their product that you’ll never get a chance to do it again.

Saying you have to act quickly

Of course they only do this so that you’ll buy the product without doing any research into whether or not it’s good.

Which brings me to my next point…

How Can You Stop From Becoming A Victim?

Again Shiny Object Syndrome can happen to anyone, and still to this day there are times when I find my emotions are outweighing my rational thought process because I saw something that supposedly could make my life easier.

However there are 3 key things I have done to shake this feeling off, that way I don’t go wasting my money and time on the latest greatest thing.

So if you follow these 3 simple guidelines, I know you’ll also see that SOS won’t have a hold over you anymore.

1. Choose One Method To Follow

To avoid paralysis analysis and more importantly keeping you from jumping from one opportunity to the next, choosing only one method to follow is absolute key.

Because while there are several legitimate ways one can go about making money online, such as…

If you don’t stay focused on one just one method then you’ll always be chasing they next shiny object.

So pick one method and stick with it no matter what, then before you know it you’ll become successful.

2. Do Your Own Research

I always tell anyone who’s looking to buy a product online, that they should never take someones advice blindly (including mine) — but rather go out and do their own research before making a final decision.

Because many of these online products nowadays will show you mansions and fancy cars, then say if you buy their product you’ll be able to afford all of this.

Or as I mentioned a second ago they will say that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and if you don’t sign up within the next 30 minutes then you’ll be out of luck.

But I’ll tell you right now that if a product really is worth buying, it’s not going anywhere.

So take your time and research how the product works, who the owner is, if people really are becoming successful due to it’s training and so forth.

And you’ll find out for yourself that yes the product does offer value and is worth buying, or that it is not.

3. Simply Walk away If It Sounds To Good To Be True

If you ever find yourself looking at a product that is offering you something that seems too good to be true, like being able to make thousands of dollars by next week — or that you only have to work 10 minutes a day to be successful online, simply take a step back so you can let your emotions settle down.

Because if you hear someone offer you something you’ve always wanted, your naturally going to get excited and not start thinking straight.

But by simply removing yourself from the sales page, and doing what I said in step 2 ( which is do your own research ) — you’ll be able to make a much wiser decision.

Final Thoughts

Shiny Object Syndrome is very easy to fall victim too, but when you follow my steps such as researching products before you buy them and choosing only one method pursue — you’ll find that its easy to stop chasing every product that comes your way.

Now if you’re interested on how to make money online as an affiliate marketer and don’t know what product you should buy to help you out — I will tell you that this one right here has remained my #1 top rated program online by far!

It has easy to follow step by step training, a huge community of people you can get help from, and several tools you help you become successful.

But don’t take my word for it….

As I just said do your own research, and think long and hard on what method you would like to do — because as the old saying goes there’s more than one way to skin a cat when it comes to generating money online.

However whatever you choose, remember to not let your emotions get the better of you so that you can pick a product that offers a lot of value.

Then simply stick with its training until your successful.

  1. I’ve been plagued by the shiny object syndrome, and I’ve suffered dearly for it.

Since January, I’ve been jumping from one shiny object to the other, only for me to be incurring loses upon loses.

I’ve learned my lesson the hard way, and I hope others do too, before they become victims too.

Your post serves as a healthy reminder to keep away from whatever glitters, because it most likely may not be gold.

    • Don’t feel too bad, because like I said in my post SOS happens to almost everyone. The important thing though is you said you’ve learned your lesson, and therefore will not fall for it again.

And as long as you do this, then you’re already doing better than most people online — because they truly believe making money online is something that happens fast and easily which simply isn’t true.

  2. I enjoyed reading this post! Every word of it was true about shiny objects that deter us regularly.

I remember when I first heard about Wealthy Affiliate. I had my doubts and actually sat on those thoughts for months just researching it to make sure I wouldn’t fall for another scam. Now my only regret is that I didn’t start sooner!

I liked all of the points you made and I’m glad you shared it with us. Thank you!

    • I’m glad to see that you did your research, and aren’t just blindly buying program because it sounds good.

And while many online programs are out to take your money, Wealthy Affiliate is actually my favorite training platform online due to it showing people step by step how to build an income online, and never trying to up sells into people just to make more of a profit.

Thanks again for taking the time to stop by and share your thoughts with us. 🙂

  3. I really enjoyed your post. Shiny object syndrome truly has affected many people and has made them lose some money and a wasted time and effort.

Your article is really an eye opener and very informative. Not all that glitters are gold, and people shouldn’t say yes to everything they see or buy online. Your 3 guidelines are good enough to save people from falling victim of SOS if duly followed.

    Thanks for sharing this.

    • Thanks for the kind words, and I hope that this post will help a lot of people from chasing those shiny objects. Because as I mentioned within my post, the only thing they bring is disappointment and less money in your pocket.

  4. Hey Michael!

After reading your review, I remember the story of my father. He also suffered from Shiny Object Syndrome in the same way.

One day a phone call comes to him, and it is said that he won a lottery, which is randomly drawn by the network company. To get the prize money, he has to send $150 dollars within just an hour for registration purpose.

Nevertheless, my dad was hypnotized. I also face Shiny Object Syndrome while working on Affiliate Marketing. So proper knowledge, patience, and research are needed to verify a scam. Thanks for the valuable reviews.

    • Sorry to hear that both you and your dad suffered from Shiny Object Syndrome, but as I’ve told many other people it can and probably will happen to the best of us.

But as long as you learn how to overcome this feeling, and also learn what the signs are of a “shiny object” — then you’ll be doing a lot better than most people.

You see it’s the people that know the program / product is only selling hype — but still buy it anyways because they think it will help them. However all that ends up happening is they lose both money and time.

Now if you’re interested in affiliate marketing, and still haven’t found a program to join — I highly suggest you check this program out here.

It provides a amazing trading that’s updating on a regular basis, weekly webinars, all the tool you’ll need to become successful, and a VERY affordable payment plan.

So if you have any questions about it, feel free to send me a message and I’ll be glad to help you out. 🙂
